Link-Belt unveils new 238
HYLAB 5 crawler crane
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March
2003) — Link-Belt
Construction Equipment Co.
announces the new 238 HYLAB 5,
150-ton (136 mt) lattice boom
crawler crane. The 238 HYLAB 5
crane features increased
capacities with longer
conventional boom, completely new,
roomier cab, a new SML-10 load
moment indicator, slab-type
counterweights, more engine
horsepower and a remote hydraulic
oil cooler.
Link-Belt’s HYLAB (HYdraulic
LAttice Boom) Series of lattice
boom cranes with hydraulic
controls was first introduced in
1987 and today has more that 2000
units operating worldwide. Today’s
new 238 HYLAB 5 crane enjoys a
legacy of customer satisfaction
with bulletproof reliability, low
operating costs and productivity
that continues to lead the
industry in bringing to market
enhanced features that have set
the standard for crawler crane
performance.
“We’ve made a great crane even
better,” says Pat Collins, senior
product manager, lattice boom
cranes. “The features we’ve added
make the 238 H5 unbeatable in its
class.”
Strongest lift chart in class
With a newly designed lower and
additional 51,000 lbs. more
counterweight, the 238 HYLAB 5 in
some areas of the chart out picks
its predecessor by 10 tons.
The 238 H5 features 140,000
lbs. (65 503 kg) of total
counterweight in a nine-piece
design. It consists of one, 14,000
lbs. (6 530 kg) base
counterweight, six, 13,000 lbs. (5
897 kg) wing counterweights and
two, 24,000 lbs. (10 886 kg) side
frame counterweights. All of the
upper counterweights quickly and
easily mount on the upper with the
newly designed hydraulic lift
system. The side frame
counterweights are self-installed,
also using the boom base and 10
ft. (3.05 m) self-assembly
section.
The machine’s tread members
measuring 25 ft. (7.52 m) long
with a 19 ft. 2 in. (5.84 m)
overall width are all-welded,
precision-machined steel frames
are mounted on the lower frame
using the boom base and 10 ft.
(3.05 m) self-assembly section.
The tread members feature 44”
(1.12 m) self-cleaning track
shoes, sealed track rollers, idler
and drive planetaries, hydraulic
track tension and compact
hydrostatic drives for maintenance
free operation. The crane is
equipped with hydraulic jacks for
easy track removal and loading.
Standard left, right and front
catwalks easily remove and store
for transport. The complete
machine, with maximum boom and
jib, loads out in seven loads.
Attachment options - not only
stronger, but also longer
The 238 HYLAB 5 is equipped
with 260 ft. (79.25 m) of new
conventional tube boom, 10 ft.
(6.10 m) more than the nearest
competitor. Bar pendants are new
and attach to the boom extension
for easy storage.
A fan-post style luffing
attachment is available with a 347
ft. (105.8 m) maximum tip height.
The maximum working load and
radius is 3,100 lbs (1 406 kg) at
233 ft. (71.02 m). The maximum
luffing boom, luffing jib and
fixed fix combination is 165 + 150
+ 30 ft. (50.29 + 45.72 + 9.14 m).
In addition to its outstanding
lift crane capabilities, the boom
top sections have universal
connecting lugs for auxiliary
sheaves and a pile-driving
adapter. To make the 238 HYLAB 5
even more versatile and
productive, “blocked-over-end”
capacities are available, and the
rated capacity limiter is equipped
with load sensing cells in the
boom hoist dead-end.
The front drum maximum hoist
pull is 41,750 lbs. (18 939 kg)
and line speed is 412 ft/min.
(125.6 m/min). The rear drum
maximum hoist pull is 25,762 lbs.
(11 686 kg) and line speed is 667
ft/min. (203.3 m/min). The large,
grooved hoist drums are easily
accessible for routine
maintenance. Matching rear to
front drum performance is an
available option.
An optional third drum is
available with 20,555 lbs. (9 324
kg) maximum line pull and 365
ft/min. (111.3 m/min) of maximum
line speed. The clamshell /
dragline rating is 22,700 lbs. (10
297 kg) with 100 ft. (30.5 m) of
tubular boom. A hydraulic,
fan-driven, remote mounted
hydraulic oil cooler with
thermostatic control to ensure
cool running hydraulic oil and
components in duty cycle
applications.
New HYLAB cab with
user-friendly features
The 238 HYLAB 5 cab features a
full complement of
“operator-friendly” gauges and
controls, such as backlit gauges,
adjustable armrest-mounted,
single-axis controls, low-effort
hydraulic pedals with minimal
pedal range of motion. Another
“creature-comfort” feature is the
environmental control unit with
standard 18,600 BTU cab air
conditioning and 19,000 BTU
heater. The ergonomic design
offers the operator several
advantages, such as greater
visibility; more room, easy to
read and intelligently located
controls and gauges, adjustable
boom and load hoist controls and
an six-way adjustable seat. Most
importantly, the new cab is set up
to be highly functional and very
comfortable.
